At Kings Lynn, in 1590 poor Margaret Read was burned at the stake for sorcery & witchcraft. As the flames engulfed her body, legend has it that her chest burst open and her heart flew out into the air. It hit the brickwork high up at 15 Tuesday Market, where it scorched the bricks, before bouncing down towards the River Ouse. Once there the heart dived into the water and as it sank the waters frothed angrily like a cauldron. Can you find the Witch’s Heart in Kings Lynn? In Norwich, in 1500 & 1600 hundreds, women were accused and tried for sourcery and witchcraft, even though they were just spinsters or herbalists. At Bishops Bridge they would be thrown into the River Wensum, if the poor woman floated and swam, it proved she was GUILTY. If she drowned then she was declared innocent!! The Guilty were then marched across the bridge to an area named Lollards Pit. Here they were tied to a stake, in the middle of a bonfire and burnt alive. Presently there is a public house called Lollards Pit at the site.
