As with all regional dialects, there are always words or phrases used by the Locals.  Norfolk is no different.  One of our favourites is Bishy Barnabee – Norfolk slang for Ladybirds.  It has been difficult to find out why but the  most popular thought seems to be a play on words from a Bishop Bonner of East Dereham in the 16th century.  With his Catholic bright red cloak, thought to be connected.  However Bishops wear purple cloaks.  I guess we will never truly know. Norfolks Fair Maidens song: ‘Bishy-bishy-barney-bee, tell me when my wedding be, if it be tomorrow day, take your wings and fly away. Fly to east and fly to west, but fly to him that I love best’.’
