“And we think of it simply as rain, as if it were one thing, as if we understood it…Maybe there is no such thing as rain; there are only raindrops, each with their own story.” (Robin Wall Kimmerer, Braiding Sweetgrass) A Drop in Time (V1) features a post with Chinese Turquoise set in a sawtooth bezel and an articulating hand sawn teardrop crowned with a picturesque triple peaked mountain range. Nestled in the belly of each drop, the mountain range rests here, with peaks bursting upward into a harmonious void. The mountains have been hand sawn, fabricated, oxidized and polished to a high shine. Posts can be worn independently without the teardrop. The process of working in pairs has to be slow and intentional; there is no way around that. These mountains were cut, textured and polished separately but simultaneously. Moving back and forth between the reduction process and polishing process countless times to maintain similar textures, forms and silhouettes for each pair. They grew together organically, with some natural variation while maintaining a look and feel of being equal and balanced. Working in this way allowed the faces of the mountains to reveal themselves slowly and naturally, following the order of controlled chaos at a pace that is gentle and hypnotic. Finding the balance between calculated precision and spontaneous intuition was key. Each individual exists in a way that is beautiful on its own, but as a pair it exists as a whole new entity. I was so certain that “A Drop in Time” was an idiom that already existed, but it turned out to be my brain combining “a drop in the bucket” and “a moment in time.” A drop in the bucket refers to the almost microscopic significance of something, especially in the shadow of a vast and monumental whole. A moment in time speaks of the expression of a shared human experience. During the time this series was in development, an immense feeling of “things will never be the same” has been universally understood now because of what we’ve gone through and what we’re still going through. This series began in darkness; as a seed deep in the cold, dark ground. Seeking symmetry and balance during a painfully chaotic time, progress crept along at a pace that was exactly right. Each one of these pieces turned into a chapter of a novel. Every technical error followed by a logistical adaptation, conversations with friends, sudden realization that woke me up in the night, they were all fundamental aspects of this evolution. Each part of the process is necessary. From germination to sprouting into a seedling, growing pains and all, support the instinctive need to send roots deep down as leaves ramble on towards the light. It all leads to the innate destination of total fulfillment; the moment of Fruition.
